To get a green card based on your family relationship to a U.S. citizen or LPR (green card holder) you must fit into one of five (5) Preference Categories- Immediate Relatives and Family 1st through 4th Preference. Because there is a quota on how many visas are given out annually, the number of green cards given to each Preference Category each year is limited. Immediate Relatives are exempted from this quota and persons who qualify under this category don't have to wait for a green card to become available - they may apply immediately. Applicants who qualify under Family 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th Preference are given green cards depending on their category and when they filed their petition. Applicants can generally calculate how long it will take to get their green card through the Visa Bulletin which is published each month by the U.S. State Department. Mainland China, India, Mexico, and the Philippines have their own categories as they traditionally have a longer wait time due to the siginificant demand in these countries.
